Proficiency Levels

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) outlines six levels of language proficiency. Many series of TEFL coursebooks will also have six levels, but since there’s not a one-to-one match on the levels, here’s a chart on how the coursebooks tend to align with the CEFR levels, as well as what to expect for each level.

Keep in mind that this is a generalization. Not every coursebook series has six levels, and even those that do may not align to the CEFR standards shown here.

If you’re preparing your students for an international standardized test (like the TOEFL, IELTS, or YLE), chances are you’ll need to know which CEFR level your students are at, or perhaps which level they are striving for.
